  • 1. Essential Documentation

FEMA will need to verify your identity and your connection to the damaged property. Gather these items in a waterproof, portable container or a secure digital cloud:

    • Proof of Identity: Social Security Number (SSN) for at least one household member, and a government-issued photo ID.

    • Proof of Occupancy: Documents showing the damaged home was your primary residence (e.g., utility bills, bank statements, or a lease agreement).

    • Proof of Ownership: For homeowners, have your deed, mortgage statement, or property tax bill ready.

    • Insurance Information: A list of all your coverage (homeowners, flood, auto, etc.) and your policy numbers.

    2. Evidence of Damage

FEMA inspectors use your descriptions and photos to verify the extent of the loss.

    • Take Photos and Videos: Capture the damage to the structure of your home and your personal property before you start cleaning up.

    • List Damaged Items: Create an inventory of lost or damaged items, noting their estimated value.

    • Keep Receipts: Save every receipt for emergency repairs, temporary lodging (hotels), or replacement of essential items.

    3. Financial and Contact Info

To speed up the process, ensure you have the following ready:

    • Household Income: Your total annual household income (before taxes) at the time of the disaster.

    • Direct Deposit Info: Bank name, account type, routing number, and account number. Direct deposit is significantly faster than a mailed check.

    • Current Contact Info: A phone number and mailing address where you can be reached if you are displaced from your home.

    4. Critical First Steps

    • File with Insurance First: FEMA cannot provide money for losses covered by insurance. You must file your insurance claim and eventually provide FEMA with your settlement or denial letter.

    • Download the FEMA App: This allows you to apply for assistance directly from your phone, upload documents, and track your application status.

    • Apply Even if You’re Unsure: Eligibility can be complex. Even if you have insurance, you should apply to see if you qualify for help with deductibles or items insurance doesn't cover.
